        A childhood passion towards police service has led this young achiever to clear the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination this year.

        V Solomon Nesakumar of Nesapakkam has secured the 280th rank in UPSC and is confident of getting into Indian Police Service (IPS).

        As many as 44 candidates from Tamilnadu cleared the civil service examinations this year and Nesakumar is one among them.

        Elimination of corruption, improving the image of police and being more approachable to public are some of the top priorities for this young achiever.

        'A strong desire from my childhood to emulate achievements of police officers has led me to take up IPS as a career', he says proudly.

        A native of Madurai, Nesakumar finished his schooling at Vikasa School and stepped into Arulmigu Kalasalinga College of Engineering, Srivalliputhur.

        After graduating in Instrumentation and Control Engineering, he worked as a lecturer at National Engineering College, Kovilpatti, but later quit the job to pursue his dream. In time, he appeared for the civil service examination for the first time in 2001. However he did not clear the examinations. His ambition however kept him going and his fifth attempt has brought success and he has secured the 280th rank.

        'Last year, I went up to the interview level, But I couldn't make it. I was totally upset and lost confidence in UPSC. However my family members encouraged me and I took the preliminary examination in two days time after the interview', he says.

        He had opted for sociology as an optional subject in the preliminary examination and public administration and geography in the main examination.

        Talking about the examinations, he says to succeed in UPSC one needs to put in hard work and one should have a deep desire for it . 'Nearly three lakh students appear for the examinations annually and only a few get through where they are filtered in every stage', he adds.

        In recent years, the number of students appearing for civil service examinations from Tamilnadu are on increase, he says.

        Turning towards his family, Nesakumar says his family is an asset to him and they had kept him going through many hurdles. His father - S Vasantha Kumar, a retired employee of Madurai and mother V Geetha is a house wife. Nesakumar is married to Sudhasree, a software professional working for Wipro.

        Nesakumar is waiting for his orders to undergo three months training in Mussorie and 11 months IPS training in Hyderabad.
