2 Medals for Indian Archers

  • Indian men's recurve archers went down fighting against Korea in the final of the World Cup Stage II at Medellin, Columbia recently.
  • The Indian team of Atanu Das, Thupuvoyi Swuro and Sanjay Boro fought gallantly to go down in the tiebreak and claim the silver medal.
  • The Indian mixed team of Das and Laishram Bombayla Devi won the bronze medal by beating their Mexican rivals.
  • The Korean side began strongly winning the first two sets to go 4-0 up.

Validity of sports code

  • The Delhi high court has directed all National Sports Federations (NSF) to follow the national sports code. This simply means that the Union sports ministry's guidelines on age and tenure restriction have attained legal sanctity.

  • This is a shot in the arm for the ministry which suspended the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) and Archery Association of India (AAI) for not implementing age and tenure directives. The court's directive will certainly make all NSFs accountable and their functioning transparent.

  • The sports ministry has repeatedly outlined that recognition to any NSF would rely on the current legal status of the organisation, recognition by the respective international federation, the Asian federation and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). The IOA had also challenged the government's authority, but the latest directive from the court has come as a jolt.

Richmond Open

  • Joshna Chinappa ended a career-long losing run to Australia's former world champion Rachael Grinham when she upset the top seed in straight games to win the inaugural $10,000 Richmond Open.
  • World No.21 Chinappa beat her 16th-ranked opponent 11-9, 11- 5, 11-8 for the first time in six meetings to bag her ninth Women's Squash Association (WSA) tour title at the Country Club of Virginia.

Ambassador of TCS World 10K 2014

  • Multiple Olympic champion Carl Lewis was confirmed as the event ambassador of the TCS World 10K 2014 recently. The event will be flagged off from Bangalore`s Sree Kanteerava Stadium on May 18.
  • In a career spanning from 1979 to 1996, Lewis won 10 Olympic medals including nine golds in disciplines as varied as 100m, 200m, 4X100m relay and Long jump. Besides the Olympic glory, he also won 10 World Championships medals, setting numerous records. The International Olympic Committee honoured him with the title, the Sportsman of the Century for his unrivalled achievement as a track and field athlete.

Badminton Asian Championship

  • For the first time after their reunion, doubles duo of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa made it to the quarterfinals of an event outside India.
  • The pair stunned third seeds A Duanganong and V Kunchala 21-11, 21-18 in the pre-quarters of the Badminton Asian Championship in Gimcheon, South Korea.
  • PV Sindhu and RMV Gurusaidutt joined the doubles specialists in the quarterfinals. While Sindhu defeated Eriko Hirose for the first time in her career 14-21, 21-13, 21-18, Guru registered a hard-fought victory
    over Wang Tzu Wei of Chinese Taipei 17-21, 21-13, 21-19.

Asian Championship

  • India's teen sensation P V Sindhu and Commonwealth Games gold medallist pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa had to settle for bronze medals after losing their respective semifinals matches in the Asian Badminton Championship held at Korea.

  • The 18-year-old Sindhu fought hard for one hour and 18 minutes before losing to the two-time reigning All England champion Shixian 21-15 20-22 12-21 in the women's singles competition.

  • In women's doubles, Jwala and Ashwini failed to breach the defence of Luo Yu and Luo Ying, and suffered a 12-21 7-21 loss to the world number 10 Chinese pair.
