The popular sports of the State are: Cricket, Football, Volleyball, Cycling, Swimming, Tracking, Badminton and Table Tennis. The traditional games of the State are Gulli-danda and then Pittu.

The youngest captain of the Indian Cricket Team, Mansoor All Khan Pataudi was born in Bhopai. Bhopal is also known for its hockey lovers. The Aishbagh Stadium is synonymous with hockey players. The city has produced many national and international players for Indian hockey team.The more famous one being Aslam Sher Khan, who represented India in several internationai hockey tournaments and was a part of the World Cup winning team in 1975. He later joined politics and went on to become a Member of Parliament. He also served the national hockey by being a part of the national selection committee. His father Ahmed Sher Khan represented India at the Berlin Olympics in 1936 along with Major Dhyan Chand.

State Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare

Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare, Madhya Pradesh was established in 1975 to promote the sports and youth welfare activities of Govt, of Madhya Pradesh.

The main activities of the Directorate are:

1. To promote sports and adventurous activities.

2. To provide sports facilities, inf rastructure and security.

3. To spot the talent and provide necessary guidance.

4. To create necessary environment for various sports so as to improve the interest of players in the discipline.

5. To co-ordinate between the government and various sports organizations and bodies.

State Sports Policy, 2005

The first Sports Policy was prepared in the year 1989 and its re-evaiuation was done after five years and subsequently a new Sports Policy was introduced in 1994, In 'this policy, though all round development of sports were included but the policy could not survive due to paucity of funds, it was therefore, necessary to bring forth a concrete sports policy so as to achieve the objectives, in which sports and physical education could be included along with the academic syllabus. The sports policy, 2005 aims to identify the hidden talents of rural and tribal areas;

Motive and Objective

The main endeavour of the policy is to develop physical endurance in youth and at the same time, it focuses on the utilization of young energetic .generation in nation-building, friendship, social harmony and above all, the use of YuvaTurk's energy in right direction.

Other Organization

In Madhya Pradesh sporting activities are promoted and managed through different wings. Some of the important organizations working in the field of sport are as follows:

1. State Sports Council: with the aim of creating a healthy society it was setup by the state govt. It plans policies for multi faceted development of sports in M.P. it also coordinates between different sports organization, It aims at developing character and discipline in the youths. It Works in association with the National Sports Institute, Patiala and is involved in organizing various sports activities at all level through out the state. It also recommends sport persons for scholarships.

2 National Cadet Corps. It was established in the year 1948 with the aims of creating potential youths for the nation who could be called for the service of the country if the need arises. It trains cadets to develop the qualities of Discipline, hardiness, Patriotism and honesty. It develops good citizen for the country. Its head office in Madhya Pradesh is at Bhopal. It imparts an overall development of the cadet through its varied activities.

Sport Awards

To motivate and recognize distinguished players of the state various awards are given by the state govt, some of these awards are as follows:

1 Eklavya award: it is given to the junior players of different sports in order to motivate them to reach new heights of success. Only the domicile of M.P. who has been in active .sport for the past five years and has participated in any state or national event for two years and have won trophy is eligible for the award. Maximum 10 players are awarded each year. Prize includes cash R. 10000, Certificate, Tie, Blazer and a shield

2 Viswamitra award: it is given to he coaches who have trained player who has won at least 2 Gold, or 4 silver or 6 Bronze medals in last five years in any national event or has Won any international medal.Prize contains Cash Rs. 20000, Blazer, Tie and Shield. (Hi)

3 Vikram award: it is given to senior players of the. State from different sports. Prize contains cash Rs 20000, Blazer, Tie, and Shield. Eligibility criterion is same as Eklavya Awards.

4 Special Award: International Medal winner player is also given a special award by the state govt.

In order to develop a healthy sport personal pool in the state we to make fundamental changes, like developing better infrastructure facilities, organizing regular competition, motivation children to participate in sports etc. keeping such points in mind state govt, has announced its New Sport Policy 2005. Some of the major points of the policy are as follows:

1. To set up a sport assistance Fund.

2. To give priorities to sport persons in the appointment as sports teacher in the state.

3. To establish State Sports Authority in place of State Sports Council.

4. To establish District sport centers.

5. Every vi llage Panchayat has to develop one games field within 5 years.

6. A year wise calendar for sporting activities.
