Answer:
Hi Dushyant,
I also have law as my optional for prelims. Considering you are still in college, I assume you will be in touch with most of the subjects.
First I would suggest that you get solved papers for prelims by Huma Khan, this will give you a fair idea of the manner of preparation.
In terms of books to use, stick with ones you have been using in college for the relevant subjects. I will give you the list of books I have used:
- Constitutional Law: M.P Jain ( it gives you a good understanding of the subject) and J.N Pandey( basically for case laws more than concepts)
- International Law: Read Shaw or Starke for the concepts and then S.K Kapoor as it gives the Indian perspective also.
- Criminal Law: Just stick with K.D Gaur. Its sufficient.
- Contracts: Avatar Singh is the good but you might want to refer to some other books like Pillai too.
- Torts: Ratanlal and Dhirajlal for concepts and Bangia for cases.
- Jurisprudence: Salmond for general theories and Paranjape for Schools of Jurisprudence and Indian angle. I looked at Dias also but its really not required.
In addition to this also look at articles from jstor and westlaw for Int'l Law and Jurisprudence. If these are not available try SSRN.
Also always try to make a list of landmark/ important cases while studying especially in contracts and torts and to a certain extent in Consti also.
Try to refer to the bare acts including human rights treaties and UN Charter, as much as possible.
This should set you up for prelims. Do let me know if you need any other information.
Cheers
