Dear Kalyani & Rani,
If both of you are from history background, then you will not find it very hard to prepare for the pre. Anyways, irrespective of whether you belong from history or non-history background, following is a list of books which will help you in gearing up for the prelims. These are the prescribed and most preferred books for preparation.

- NCERT books of History for Class XI & XII (old pattern) [These are essential for building the foundation and clearing the concepts)
- R.S Sharma & Romila Thapar - Ancient India
- J.L Mehta, Satish Chandra - Medieval India
- Bipin Chandra - Modern India
- IGNOU notes (just glance through the factual data)
- Spectrum or Tata McGraw Hill's manual of Indian History (for a detailed revision and recap of all the above books).

Besides these you can also go through other books available in the market for in-depth details, only if you are really interested to know about certain info. However, the above mentioned books are more than enough for comprehensive and detailed preparation.

Best Regards
Shonit
