Interview at the Civil Services is essentially a Test of Personality and not of ones academic excellence. I for one have never really understood the concept of preparing for the interview. Interviews main purpose is to test the candidates skills of analysis, spontaneous thinking, expression, suitability for public office, awareness of the current events and most importantly, the personality of the candidate.

Acquiring excellence in all the above mentioned parameters is an ever continuing process, the starting of which has to be made when one begins the preparation for civil services, if not started earlier. In fact most of us have these skills from a very young age. It is only a matter of refining these skills.

The best way to keep oneself ever prepared for any personality test is to be in touch with oneself and what is happening around him/her. One has to keep reading the news papers and news magazines regularly, keep watching those good news channels regularly and discussing the issues with learned friends very often. Communication skills have to be honed up. If one is giving interview in English, it is better to develop speaking skills so as to convey oneself better. In depth discussions with likeminded friends would improve ones skills of analysis and comprehension, spontaneous thinking and expression. One has to get different sides to the same issue and spend some time trying to understand all facets. This would help one in acquiring the skills of analysis.

One has to have a clear understanding of the personal details filled up during applying for main exams. Care has to be taken for filling up the interests column as one can expect that a lot of questions can be asked on this. You have to do some real hard work in this as the interviewers expect something special out of you in the topics that you mentioned as your own interests.

Ultimately, since the test is essentially of your personality, there is hardly anything you can do to improve it in a very short time between your mains and interview. Keep it as an ongoing process FROM TODAY. Do't wait till mains or whatever.

But since there is an ample free time after mains, one can always brush up one’s knowledge in subjects of basic education qualification and also mains. Some extensive study in subjects related to one’s interests would also help immensely. For example, I had given table tennis as one of my interests. I was asked a question on ping-pong diplomacy.
