Assam Govt. Raised financial assistance to Rs 75,000 for UPSC Prelims Qualifiers
Dispur has hiked the scholarship amount by Rs 25,000 for those who clear the preliminary examination of the civil service examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
The move aims at creating more IAS, IPS and other allied service officers from the state. Students, who clear the civil services (preliminary) examination will receive a one-time financial assistance of Rs 75,000, up from Rs 50,000.
Sources in Dispur said the move has given a much needed morale boost to the candidates from the state for whom the UPSC civil service examination was earlier a distant dream.
The state government had initially started the scheme in 2008.
“We had given Rs 50,000 to those students who could clear the civil service (preliminary) examination. In 2008, there were only a few students who had cleared the preliminary examination,” said a source, adding that in 2009 nearly 30 students had cleared the preliminary examination.
“The numbers are increasing now. In 2010, we came to know that there are 32 students who have cleared the preliminary examination. Of these, 26 candidates had already claimed the scholarship this year and we are expecting to receive six more applications,” added the source.
“The move to hike the amount was initiated by the government because the cost of living has increased over the years and the civil service aspirants need more financial assistance to prepare for the examination. This is going to particularly help students who are financially weak,” the source said.
