Home Science Paper-I
I. Human physiology and hygiene :
1. Cells and tissues, anatomy and functioning of skeletal, circulatory,
nervous, respiratory, excretory, digestive and endocrine systems and sensory
organs.
2. Causes, mode of transmission, signs & symptoms, care and preventive measure
of common disease such as cholera, malaria, small pox, typhoid, tetanus and
whooping cough.
II. Nutritional biochemistry :
1. Composition, classification, structure, properties and important reactions of
carbohydrates, protein, lipids, nucleic acid, DNA, and RNA. Role of nucleic
acids in protein synthesis.
2. Enzyme -- characteristics, classification, mechanism of action, factors
affecting enzymes activity - temperature, pH, Substrate and enzyme
concentration.
III. Food science and food preservation :
1. Protein foods - milk and milk products, pulses, nuts & oil seeds, egg, meat,
poultry & fish, their composition and processing.
2. Vegetable and fruits - composition and processing.
3. Use of sugar and fats in food processing.
4. Food spoilage and Food toxicants.
5. Methods of preservation - use of low and high temperature, preservatives and
irradiation.
IV. Basic nutrition :
1. Meaning and importance of nutrition. Functions, requirements, sources and
effects of deficiency & excess of protein, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins and
minerals, Water functions and balance.
2. Energy - Unit, methods of measurement, BMR, total energy requirement and
factors affecting requirement.
3. Digestion and absorption of food. Metabolism - glycolysis, gluconeogensis,
glycogenolysis, glycogenesis, citric and cycle, deamination, transamination,
decarboxylation, urea cycle, β-oxidation and ketogenisis.
V. Meal planning and normal nutrition :
1. Food groups, principles of meal planning and balance diet.
2. Nutrition during adulthood, pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood,
adolescence and elderly.
3. Food service management in institutions like hostel, hospital, cafeteria,
canteen, industries etc.
VI. Therapeutic nutrition :
1. Meaning, team approach, types of diet & feeding the patient.
2. Etiology, symptoms, metabolic changes, dietary principles and modification of
diet in fevers, weight management, constipation diarrhea, peptic ulcer,
hepatitis, cirrhosis, hepatic coma, acute and chronic nephritis. diabetes and
coronary heart diseases.
VII. Community nutrition
1. Concept of scope
2. Assessment of nutritional status.
3. Food additives and adulteration.
4. Malnutrition-causes and management.

VIII. Health, mother craft and population education

infectious diseases, immunization.
2. Meaning and principle of growth and development.
3. Reproductives system, pregnancy, common ailment & toxemia of pregnancy, and
their management. Care of expectant mother. Preparation of confinement and
arrival of new born, care of new born and baby.
4. Population education - definition, population dynamics, causes and
consequences of population, explosion, Family life and sex education. Small
benefits. Family planning methods.
IX. Development aspects-infancy to pre school years :
1. Importance of early years, concept of critical periods.
2. Infancy - physical development, socio-emotional development, cognitive
development, motor development. Concepts fo Freud's, Erickson and Piaget theory
(in brief).
3. Preschool years - physical and motor development, preoperational stages of
congnitive development, language development, speech
defects, emotional development, personality development, stages of Erickson's
theory. Play and creativity.
X. Preschool education :
1. Objectives, Methods & philosophies of pre school education in India. Brief
mention of Comenius Rousseau, Pestalozzi, Frobel, Montessori and Dewey.
2. Preschool education in India, Brief mention of missionaries, Arundales,
Montessori, Tagore, Gandhi, Giju Bhai, Badheka and Tara Bai Modak.
3. Role of government agencies like CSWB, ICCW, NCERT, NIPPCCD, IAPE in movement
of preschool education, Integrated child development services (ICDS). Role and

I. Textiles fiber, yarn and fabric construction.

2. Natural fibers-origin, manufacture and properties of cotton, linen, wool,
silk and jute.
3. Manmade and synthetic fibers-Rayon, nylon, polyester and acrylic, their
origin, manufacture and importance to consumer.
4. Type of yarn, mechanical and chemical spinning process.
5. Fabric construction techniques-felting, braiding, bonding, knotting, knitting
and weaving. Types of waves, loom and its parts.
II. Fabric finishes, dyeing an printing :
1. Objective of finishing.

merecerizing and calendaring.
3. Texturing finishes-Embossing, moiering, schenerising, napping, flocking and
acid finish.
