(Success Story) IAS 81st Rank: Deepti's mother vows to fight for girl child
The post office in Panchkula's Sector 8 had an unusual liveliness to it on Thursday. And all the attention was directed towards one of the employees, Neelam Uppal. Clad in a celebratory mustard 'salwaar-kameez', she looked every bit the happy mother of Deepti, a content writer who has secured the 81st rank in UPSC examination.
''The phone hasn't stopped ringing,'' she said, just before taking another congratulatory call from a well-wisher, one she said she hadn't heard from in a long time. ''People who come to post office regularly also called to share their happiness over Deepti's success,'' the proud mother gushed.
Pouring heaps of praise over her daughter, Neelam, a resident of Panchkula's Sector 12, said, ''It's time for society to finally realize that girls are in no way inferior to boys.'' Sending a strong message against female foeticide, she added, ''This is a lesson for those residing in the rural areas of Haryana and Punjab to treat girls at par with boys.''
