With barely a week to go before the deadline to file appeals
in the 26/11 case, the Bombay high court is gearing up for Pakistani gunman
Ajmal Amir Kasab.
TOI in its edition dated July 22, 2010, had first reported that the state's
petition for confirmation had been filed in the HC. The appeals one by the state
challenging the acquittal of Faheem Ansari and Sabahuddin Ahmed and another by
Kasab appealing against his death sentence are likely to be filed by next week.
HC sources said the case may be listed for directions next week.
But Kasab is not likely to be produced in court for the first hearing. "The
first hearing in a confirmation case is normally for directions from the
court,'' said public prosecutor P A Pol. "As per rules, the convict who has been
sentenced to death by hanging has to remain present for his confirmation hearing
and directions for that are issued by the HC during the first hearing,'' added
Pol.
