Indigenous cryogenic engine to power GSLV-D5 on Aug. 19

  • As Geo-synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-D5) is slated to lift off around from Sriharikota, and various checks showing that the vehicle is in the pink of its health, the mood is one of optimism at the spaceport.

  • The mission’s significance is that GSLV-D5 is powered by an indigenous cryogenic engine and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has used every expertise available in the country to ensure that the engine performs smoothly this time.
  • The rocket will put India’s advanced communication satellite called GSAT-14, weighing 1,980 kg, into orbit.
  •  “The Mission Readiness Review (MRR) has cleared the vehicle. The integration of the satellite with the launch vehicle has been completed. On August 11, we plan to move the vehicle to the launch pad.”

  • There is enormous focus on this mission, as the GSLV flight with an indigenous cryogenic engine failed in April 2010. The subsequent GSLV flight with a Russian cryogenic stage also failed in December of that year.

Conservation talks on Antarctica’s living marine resources fail

  • The commission for conservation of Antarctic marine living resources (CCAMLR) in an extraordinary meeting held at Bremerhaven, recently, failed to reach any concrete agreement on the two proposals put forward for creation of marine protected areas (MPAs) in the Antarctic. CCAMLR’s members are drawn from 24 countries and the European Union.

  • The meeting was a follow up to last year’s CCAMLR meeting in Hobart, Australia, which also concluded without any consensus on marine protected areas for the Antarctic.
  • The US and New Zealand proposal calls for CCAMLR to designate a Ross Sea MPA of 2.3 million square kilometres including a ‘fully protected’ area of 1.6 million square kilometres.
  • The second proposal from Australia, France and the European Union would designate seven marine protected areas in East Antarctica covering about 1.63 million square kilometres.
  • At Bemerhaven, this year, the proposals would have been carried forward to implementation, had not one member Nation — Russia — voted against them and scuttled the whole process.

Sun’s magnetic ‘flip’ may affect our climate

  • In the next three to four months, the Sun’s magnetic field is expected to undergo a 180-degree “flip” that will see its magnetic north and south poles reverse positions.
  • The warning comes from NASA, which has been monitoring solar activity, and the U.S. space agency has cautioned that it could affect storms on Earth and even disrupt satellites.
  • The outer layers of the Sun consist of a soup of charged particles whose constant motion influences the alignment of the Sun’s magnetic field. There are two “winds” of such charged particles, one moving east-west and the other, north-south.
  • These tug at each other to move the magnetic north and south poles of the Sun, making them go a full-circle once every 22 years. This period is called a solar cycle, understood as a reorientation of the solar dynamo which is the source of the Sun’s magnetic field.

Foreign telecom vendors hang up on testing lab

  • Two years after the Department of Telecom (DoT) decided to set up a telecom equipment testing lab at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore,
  • It will address security issues, foreign vendors have now refused to share their design details with the premier academic institute as it could hurt their business interests.
  • This sudden turn of events will now further delay the setting up of a full-fledged ‘Telecom Testing and Security Certification Centre’ (TTSCC), which should have become fully operational by April 2013. It will also hurt India’s preparedness towards creating the ‘Telecom Security Directorate’ as mandated by the National Security Council.
  • Cochin shipyard to float out Vikrant on August 12
  • The State-owned Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) will use a pontoon-assisted method, designed in-house, to float out India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier (IAC-I)— to be named INS Vikrant — on August 12, four years after its keel was laid.

  • “Additional pontoons have been welded to the underwater hull of the IAC, which will increase the buoyancy of the vessel and overcome the limitation on the launching weight,”
  • The launch marks the end of the first phase of carrier construction with nearly 75 per cent of the vessel structure, including the ski-jump and most underwater equipment in place.
  • It will be redocked again for completion of superstructure and extensive outfitting, slated to be attained by 2016.
  • The revised schedule for induction of the home-made carrier into the Navy is 2018, four years later than planned.

Rouhani to form govt in IRAN

  • In the midst of parliamentarians, senior clerics, top officials and an array of foreign dignitaries, Hassan Rouhani sworn in as Iran’s new President..
  • A moderate cleric backed by the former President Mohammad Khatami and the reformists, Mr. Rouhani has emerged as a unifying figure — his comprehensive victory in the June elections amid high turnout being widely interpreted as an event that brought closure to the divisive and fractious 2009 presidential elections.
  • For the first time, Iran has invited foreign guests for a presidential inaugural, signalling Tehran’s extrovert approach during the Rouhani presidency.
  • Russia-China conduct military drill
  • Russia and China flagged off their regular anti-terrorist war games in Russia’s Urals region seen by experts as preparations for a local military conflict in Central Asia.
  • The “Peace Mission 2013” drill in the Chebarkul military training area 1,700 km east of Moscow involves 1,500 troops and more than 250 units of military hardware, including 20 aircraft and helicopters.
  • China has dispatched over 600 personnel as well as tanks, armoured personnel carriers, reconnaissance vehicles, self-propelled guns, JH-7A fighter-bombers and helicopters to participate in the drill, which will continue till August 17.
  • Joint military exercises held since 2005 alternatively in Russia and China within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) are invariably described as anti-terrorist, but in reality go far beyond their official agenda.
  • Though the scenario of the drills in Chebarkul typically provides for the destruction of large terrorist gangs, the weapons and equipment involved suggest “preparations for a full-scale local war on land”, said analyst Vasily Kashin of the Moscow-based Centre for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies.

It was 1904. Gandhi was travelling from Johannesburg to Durban on a train. His friend Henry Polak had given him a book by John Ruskin named ‘Unto this last’.He read this book during the long journey. This short book contained four essays written in 1860. The book drew from a parable of New Testament which was interpreted by Ruskin as a critic of the industrial society of late 19th century Britain. The book had a profound impact on Gandhi. He translated and paraphrased it as ‘Sarvodaya’. Debunking the utilitarian principle of ‘greatest good of the greatest number of people’, Gandhi insisted that true happiness of a society can be realised only by making the person standing at the lowest rung happy.

PROMISING FUTURE OF MOBILE TECHNOLOGY

Forty years ago, 45-year-old Martin Cooper made the first nond held mobile call in public. On 3rd April 1973, Cooper made the world’s first mobile call from a Manhattan street corner to Joel Engel, his rival in AT&T. Widely regarded as the “father of the cell phone”, Cooper told Enget “I’m calling you on a real cell phone; a personal portable hand-held cell phone.”

The clunky- heavy phone was Motorola’s DynaTac 8000x far removed from the modern, ultrathin, super-light smart phones of today It was 9 inches tot; an inch and a half wide and weighed 2.5 pounds - no wonder it was called “the brick”. It had a battery life of only 20 minutes and a single-line text-only LED screen. It would be a decade before the phone would finally reach the hands of consumers at a whopping cost of $ 3,995.
