Scientists find link between fast-melting Arctic ice and ocean acidification

  • A team of researchers has flagged changing chemistry of western region of theArctic Ocean after discovering acidity levels increasing three to four timesfaster than ocean waters elsewhere.

About:

  • The team identified a strong correlation between the accelerated rate ofmelting ice and the rate of ocean acidification.
  • The relation between sea-ice melting and rapid pH decrease, is explained infollowing ways.
  • The water under the sea ice, which had a deficit of carbon dioxide, now isexposed to the atmospheric carbon dioxide and can take it up freely.
  • The seawater mixed with meltwater is light and can’t mix easily into deeperwaters, which means carbon dioxide is concentrated at the surface.
  • The meltwater dilutes the carbonate ion concentration in the seawater, weakening its ability to neutralise the carbon dioxide into bicarbonate.
  • Ocean acidification refers to a reduction in the pH of the ocean over an extendedperiod of time, caused primarily by uptake of CO2 from the atmosphere.
  • Possible Impacts of Ocean acidification: Creates life-threatening problems forthe diverse population of sea creatures (especially organisms like oysters andcorals), plants and other living things that depend on a healthy ocean.

About:

  • Two of the laureates—John Clauser and Alain Aspect—worked on firming up the concept of quantum entanglement and developing more complex experiments that demonstrated this phenomenon, especially creating, processing and measuring what are called Bell pairs. The third laureate, Anton Zeilinger, has been chosen for his innovative use of entanglement and Bell pairs both in research and application such as quantum cryptography.

Significance:

  • Quantum information science has a broad range of potential implications in areas such as secure information transfer, quantum computing and sensing technology.
  • One of the most mature applications of quantum technology is quantum cryptography, which takes advantage of the fact that changes made to one particle in an entangled system affect the other.
  • Quantum entanglement:
