Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Amendment Bill

  • The government has decided to withdraw the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Amendment Bill, introduced in the Rajya Sabha in 2012 by the Minister of Women and Child Development.
  • The bill seeks to amend the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986, which prohibits indecent representation of women through advertisements or publications, writings and paintings (primarily the print media).
  • Government state that several legislations including the Cinematography Act, the new IT rules,the CBFC guidelines are already dealing with the modern means of media and have provisions to specifically address the issues.

North-eastern Spaceapplications centre

  • Union Home Minister laid foundation stone for Multipurpose Convention Centre and ExhibitionFacility of NESAC, in Shillong.

About:

  • It was established as a joint initiative of Department of Space (DOS) and the North EasternCouncil (NEC) in 2000.
  • Centre aims to provide dedicated service to the eight states of North Eastern Region (NER) using space science and technology.
  • It provides operational satellite communication applications services in the region in education,health care, disaster management support, and developmental communication.

WHO Report on Drowning Prevention in Asia-Pacific

  • According to the first World Health Organization (WHO) regional assessments on drowning prevention.

About:

  • In 2019, over 144 000 people drowned in the Asia Pacific region, accounting for 61%of global drowning deaths.
  • WHO has recommended best practices on drowning prevention interventions and policies,including day care for children,the use of barriers for controlling access to water, public awareness campaigns, etc.
  • A National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB-2019) report reveals that over 30,000 people died in India Due to drowning in 2019.

Typhoon In-Fa

  • Typhoon In-Fa made landfall in China’s east Zhejiang province. Typhoons are the same weather phenomenon as tropical cyclones.

About Tropical Cyclones:

  • A tropical cyclone is a rapidly rotating storm originating over tropical oceans from where it draws the energy to develop.
  • It has a low-pressure centre and Typhoon In-Fa clouds spiralling towards the eye-wall surrounding the where the weather is normally calm and free of clouds.
  • Once a tropical cyclone reaches maximum sustained winds of 74 miles per hour or higher, it is then classified as a tropical cyclone, which has different names in different regions

::ECONOMY::

Visa complies with RBI’s data localisation norms

  • Visa has become one of the first global financial services companies to have complied with the Reserve Bank of India’s data localisation norms.
  • Earlier, RBI has barred Mastercard, American Express & Diners Club from enrolling new customers for not storing their data in India.

What are RBI’s data localisation norms?

  • Data localisation norms were prescribed by the RBI in 2018.
  • It required all payment system operators to store all payments data in India. Specifically, they were asked to store full end-to-end transaction details and the information collected and processed in India within a period of six months.
  • This includes data such as customer’s name, address, mobile number, Aadhaar and PAN number and other payment-related data.

Significance of Data localisation:

  • Increases safety and security of payment systems through continuous monitoring and surveillance.
  • To securing faster and better access to personal data for law enforcement.
  • To increasing economic growth and boosting employment.

::SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY::

Self-repair mechanical damage technology

  • Researchers from Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Kolkata and IITKharagpur have developed piezoelectric molecular crystals that repair themselves from mechanical damages without need for any external intervention.
  • Piezoelectric molecules have the ability to generate an electric charge in response to applied mechanical stress.
  • Here, the broken pieces acquire electrical charges at the crack junction, leading to attraction by damaged parts and precise autonomous repair.
  • Research is supported by Department of Science and Technology via Swarna Jayanti Fellowship to CM Reddy and Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) research grants.
