NIUA’s C-Cube and WRI India launch the India Forum for Nature-Based Solutions

  • The National Institute of Urban Affairs’ (NIUA) Climate Centre for Cities (NIUA C-Cube), World Resources Institute India (WRI India) and their partners launched India’s first national coalition platform for urban nature-based solutions (NbS) at the 11th World Urban Forum in Poland.

About:

  • ‘India Forum for Nature-based Solutions’ is led by the National Institute of Urban Affairs’ Climate Centre for Cities (NIUA C-Cube) and anchored by World Resources Institute India (WRI Indija) under the Cities4Forests initiative. 
  • The India Forum for Nature-based Solutions aims to create a collective of NbS entrepreneurs, government entities and like-minded organisations, to help scale urban nature-based solutions by 

1.    Defining a shared language and by communicating benefits that inform actions at the local level including scaling up of existing NbS interventions.
2.    Driving investment and strengthening delivery mechanisms through multi-stakeholder coordination.

Uranium

  • Uranium deposits have been found in Rohil area of Sikar district of Rajasthan.

About:

  • Uranium is a silvery-white metallic chemical element assigned the chemical symbol U.
  • Is a naturally radioactive element.
  • One of its isotopes, uranium-235, is the only naturally occurring isotope capable of sustaining anuclear fission reaction.
  • Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research, mandated to identify and evaluate uranium resources for the indigenous nuclear power program.
  • Other areas for Uranium: Jadugoda (PurviSinghbhum district) in Jharkhand and in Andhra Pradesh.

International Renewable Energy Agency

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister was apprised of a Strategic Partnership Agreement signed between the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).   The Agreement was signed in January 2022.

About:

  • The aim of the Agreement is to drive ambition, leadership and knowledge on green energy transitions based on renewable energy in India.
  • The Agreement will help India’s energy transition efforts and will also help the world in combating climate change.
  • The areas of cooperation as envisaged in the Strategic Partnership Agreement will support India in achieving its ambitious target of 500 GW of installed non-fossil fuel electricity capacity by 2030. This in-turn will promote Atmanirbhar Bharat.

  • Facilitating knowledge sharing from India on scaling-up renewable energy and clean energy technologies
  • Supporting India’s efforts on long term energy planning

  • All 54 Commonwealth members have agreed to voluntarily dedicate a ‘living land’ in theirrespective countries to future generations.

  • It was created in the early 1900s when nations began to secede from British Empire to ease the process of British decolonization.
  • India is part to the Commonwealth nations.
  • It aims to support member countries to deliver their commitments under the three Rio
  • conventions i.e.,
  • UN Convention on Biological Diversity.
  • UN Convention to Combat Desertification.

NITI Aayog launches report on gig economy in India

  • The report is a first-of-its-kind study that presents comprehensiveperspectives and recommendations on the gig–platform economy in India.

About:

  • Gig workers- those engaged in livelihoods outside the traditionalemployer-employee arrangement – can be broadly classified into theplatform and non-platform-based workers.
  • Platform workers are those whose work is based on online software appslike swiggy or digital platforms, whereas, non-platform gig workers arecasual wage workers and own-account workers, working part-time or fulltime.
  • In 2020–21, 77 lakh workers were engaged in the gig economy constituting1.5% of the total workforce in India and expected to expand to 2.35 workersby 2029–30.
  • At present, about 47% of the gig workis in medium-skilled jobs, about 22%in high skilled, and about 31% inlow-skilled jobs.

Recommendations: 

  • Accelerating access to financethrough products specificallydesigned for platform workers.
  • Linking self-employed individualsengaged in the business of sellingregional products.

Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System Technology Operations and Navigation Experiment

  • NASA launched CAPSTONE, a microwave oven-sized CubeSat weighing just 55 pounds (25 kg). 

About:

  • Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System Technology Operations and Navigation Experiment (CAPSTONE), is designed to test a unique, elliptical lunar orbit.
  • The satellite, launched on Rocket Lab’s Electron rocket from the Rocket Lab Launch Complex 1, is heading toward an orbit intended in the future for Gateway, a Moon-orbiting outpost that is part of NASA’s Artemis program.
  • As a pathfinder for Gateway, CAPSTONE aims to help reduce risk for future spacecraft by validating innovative navigation technologies, and by verifying the dynamics of the halo-shaped orbit.
  • The orbit is known as a near-rectilinear halo orbit (NRHO).
