Supreme Court not to monitor Saradha probe

  • In a blow to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the Supreme Court refused to interfere with the CBI investigation into the Saradha chit-fund scam in which top Trinamool Congress leaders are accused.

  • While the investigating agency complained of “severe intimidation” by the Trinamool Congress, the party and the West Bengal government run by it accused the CBI of becoming a “tool” in the hands of the Centre to destabilise the Mamata Banerjee government in the guise of investigating the scam.

  • They accused the CBI of selectively leaking sensitive details of the investigation to the media, thus relegating the investigation to the status of a “media trial.”

  • The CBI said its officers were “severely intimidated” by the Trinamool Congress cadre en route court for appearances.

  • The court refused to entertain a contempt plea filed against Ms. Banerjee and a Minister for allegedly preventing the CBI from conducting its probe. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the State government, said all it wanted was a “fair investigation” and not a “media trial.”

Agni-V project director shunted out

  • In yet another controversy to hit DRDO, project director of nuclear-capable Agni-V missile programme R.K. Gupta has been moved out, following which he has complained to the Defence Ministry alleging victimisation.

  • While DRDO sources termed the transfer as “routine”, the officer has alleged that he was singled out by two senior officials within the organisation, including former chief Avinash Chander, who demitted his office on January 31.

  • The incident came just days after the successful canister launch of the inter-continental missile on January 31.
