21.0 OBJECTIVES

After reading this Unit you will:
be able to understand the political situation in China on the eve of the World War-I,
understand China's involvement in the war and how Japan's hostile attempts came
in the form of Twenty One Demands to curtail Chinese influence in East Asia,
be able to know how the Chinese reacted towards the Twenty One Demands,
learn abouf Paris Peace Treaty Conference and China's reaction to it, and
understand how China witnessed a massive outburst of Chinese sentiments in the
form of May 4th Movement of 1919.

21.1 INTRODUCTION

In this Unit we will examine the political situation of China on the eve of the World
War-I. The Unit also takes into account China's involvement in the war and Japan's
aggressive moves under the cloak of the war like the Twenty One Demands. We will also
discuss the May Fourth Incident of 1919 and what the Chinese expected from the peace
conference. The terms of the Paris Treaty belied China's hopes which brought about
reactions in China. This aspect has also been dealt with.
