29.0 OBJECTIVES

After reading this Unit you will be able to:

  • explain the significance of foreign'capital in China,
  • know about the role of the bourgeoisie in the 1911 Revolution,
  • understand the bosition of the business community during Yuan Shi Kai's presidency, and
  • explain how World War-I facilitated the growth of the Chinese bourgeoisie.

29.1 INTRODUCTION

Starting with the role of foreign capital in Chinese economy this Unit goes on to discuss
the emergence of bourgeoisie in China. It further discusses the role of bourgeoisie
during the 1911 Revolution and how they reacted to the rule of Yuan Shi Kai. The
bourgeoisie on the one hand contributed in the development of indigenous industry and
trade and on the other in the development of the New Culture Movement. They also
contributed in the growth of urban centres and a distinct urban culture. These aspects
have also been dealt within the Unit.
