30.0 OBJECTIVES
After reading this Unit you will be able to explain:
- how the spirit of modem nationalism emerged in China,
- the components of early twentieth century Chinese nationalism,
- the role Japanese imperialism played in invoking a nationalist and patriotic movementin China, and
- the fall out of this reinvigorated nationalism.
30.1 INTRODUCTION
This Unit goes on to explain the factors that contributed to the growth of nationalism
in China. We have already discussed in the earlier Blocks how China had suffered at the
hands of imperialist powers. As a consequence there emerged anti-foreign and
anti-Manchu feelings. These subsequently strengthened the nationalist feelings.
Manchu rule was overthrown by the 1911 Revolution. However, the question of foreign
exploitation was still there along with rival factions and power struggles. It was in such
a situation that the nationalist feelings started taking a definite shape and grew stronger.
