Centre Mulls Separate IPS Test
The government is considering the option of having a separate selection process — other than the common UPSC process for the all-India services — to get the right candidates into the Indian Police Service (IPS).
The Home Ministry has told its parliamentary standing committee that it was “examining” the suggestion for holding a separate selection process for IPS. It is a suggestion that the committee has also endorsed.
During its recent deliberations, the committee took note of the fact that apart from the severe shortage of IPS officers, the service was often not attracting the right candidates with enough inclination to get into policing.
“The committee is aware that the UPSC conducts examination for various Group ‘A’ services and Indian Police Service is one of them.... The committee understands that the candidates opting for police service have to have/should have a different attitude which this examination system is not able to guarantee,” the report, submitted in Parliament Monday, said.
