University of Mysore offering geology course for CSE
The
course offered by the University of Mysore. A geologist's job is not just about
discovery and exploration of mineral wealth and natural resources of the earth.
They need to assess natural disasters and their effects on environment, search
areas rich in underwater resources, oil and natural gas and minerals and assess
suitable areas for construction of bridges, roads, buildings and railway lines.
Started in 1960, the post-graduate course has been a must for the students
aspiring to be geologists.
The UPSC conducts examinations across the country for selection of geologist
(junior), assistant geologist in geographical survey of India and junior hydro
geologist (scientist B) in the Central Ground Water Board. Qualified persons can
also work with companies like Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, Mineral
Explorations Authority and Coal India.
"It is better to include geology as an optional subject for PUC so as to create
awareness about the subject," said another professor Balasubramanyam. There is
good scope for them to analyze and predict disasters and promote proper disaster
prevention methods. This apart, geologists play a dominant role in identifying
safe sites for multi-storied buildings, railways, landscape survey for mega
projects including tunnels, roads in ghat section and flyovers.

- Duration: 2 years (four semesters)
- Eligibility: Science graduates with minimum 45%. For SC/ST 40%.
- Mode of selection: Entrance test.
