Major welfare schemes launched by Modi Government

Ever since Modi took over charge of the new Government, Modi Government has launched a series of social, health and infrastructural programmes aimed to bring in ‘achche din’ (good days) which were promised before Lok Sabha polls :

Banking for the poorest

Taking banking to the poorest, the Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana will give each family a bank account with a debit card and an insurance cover of Rs. 1 lakh. “Today, there are crores of families that have mobile phones but no bank accounts. We have to change this. Economic development must benefit the poor and it should start from here,” the PM said. Official data puts the number of poor households in India at 6.5 crore.

Adopt a village

Modi asked all members of Parliament to adopt a village in their constituencies and turn it into a model village by 2016 using their development funds. The Sansad Aadarsh Gram Yojana strives to usher improvements in health, sanitation, greenery and cordiality.

One Rank One Pension scheme : According to the scheme, the armed forces personnel holding the same rank will get the same pension, regardless of the last drawn pay, years of service and the years served in a particular rank.

Namami Ganga Yojana : The Clean Ganga project is officially known as the Integrated Ganga Conservation Mission project or ‘Namami Ganga Yojana’. The Modi Government announced an ambitious Rs. 2037-crore ‘Namami Ganga’ project in its maiden budget to kick-start the process of cleaning up the holy river.

Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana : Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana has been proposed to meet the need to provide assured irrigation to mitigate risk to the farmer. This scheme would facilitate access to irrigation. A sum of Rs.1,000 crores has been set aside for this scheme.

A skilled workforce

The government’s mission is two-pronged — create a skilled workforce that can be employed anywhere in the world and encourage entrepreneurship to create more jobs at home. And the aim is to do this at a rapid pace. 

An all-new Random Inspection Scheme: Utilizing technology to eliminate human discretion in selection of units for Inspection, and uploading of Inspection Reports within 72 hours of inspection mandatory.

Universal Account Number: Enables 4.17 crore employees to have their Provident Fund account portable, hassle-free and universally accessible.

Apprentice Protsahan Yojana: Will support manufacturing units mainly and other establishments by reimbursing 50% of the stipend paid to apprentices during first two years of their training

Revamped Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana: Introducing a Smart Card for the workers in the unorganized sector seeded with details of two more social security schemes.

Enter the digital age

The PM wants to connect every Indian through technology, provide governance via mobile phones and have every village on a broadband platform. “E-governance is easy governance, effective governance and economic governance,” he said.

Make in India

Modi invited global manufacturers to ‘come, make in India’ and sell it to the world, with an aim to strike a balance between imports and exports and create jobs. “We have the skill, talent, discipline and determination to do something,” he said in his speech.

Zero defect, zero effect

The PM encouraged domestic manufacturers to adopt a policy of ‘zero defect, zero effect’ — make top-of-the-line products with no ill effect on the environment. He said ‘Made in India’ must stand for quality products.

Clean India campaign

Modi aims to clean up all the cities and villages of the country by 2019, when the country observes the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The government plans to achieve this with public and private participation.

Toilets in schools

The government’s target before the next I-Day is a toilet in every school, and a separate one for girls. MPs will have to take the mission forward. Corporate participation has also been sought under their corporate social responsibility.

Planning commission out

Planning Commission set up by former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru is on its way out. It will make way for an institution that gives a new direction to the country through creative thinking, public-private partnership and optimum utilisation of resources.  

Defeat poverty 

Taking the war to end poverty to another level, PM called for all South Asian countries to join India. “Why not get together with all Saarc nations to plan the fight against poverty? Let’s fight together and defeat poverty,” he said.
