Success Story : 11 of the top 25 candidates are from Delhi and the NCR
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) announced its result for 2008 on Monday. And as would befit the Capital, 11 of the top 25 candidates either belonged to Delhi and the NCR or they studied in New Delhi.
While topper Shubhra Saxena teaches at an IAS coaching institute in Delhi, Yash Garg, a junior resident at Lok Nayak Hospital, Delhi, has stood sixth. The 25-year-old did his Class XII from DPS, RK Puram and then joined Maulana Azad Medical College for his MBBS.
But why graduate in medicine when he wanted to join the civil services?
“I always wanted to become a doctor. But it was while practicing that I realised the importance of the civil services,” said Garg, who is from Sonipat, Haryana.
“As a doctor I can help patients individually. But as an administrator I will be in a position to effect institutional changes,” Garg said. He added that juggling work with study was not difficult at all.
For rank number 12 Aditi Singh, it was all about falling into the family tradition.
“My father recently retired as textile secretary to the Government of India. And my husband cracked the civil services in 2006,” said 25-year-old Singh. She is a graduate of Lady Sri Ram College and topped Delhi University in her Masters in Political Science. She has also completed her M Phil from DU.
“My husband is based in Nagaland and I am with him right now. But I can’t wait to join work,” Singh said.
Hindu College graduate Saket Kumar grabbed the 13th position. Kumar did his schooling from Modern School, Barakhamba, and has graduated in History.
“The news has to sink in. This was my second attempt and I still cannot believe that I made it to the top 20,” said 28-year-old Kumar.
