National Service Scheme Awards

• The President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, presented the National Service Scheme (NSS) Awards for 2017-18 to universities, NSS units and NSS volunteers. 

About National Service Scheme (NSS)

• It was launched in 1969. 
• Major objective is to develop the personality and character of the student youth through voluntary community service.
• NSS volunteers play an important role in spreading awareness about government initiatives such as Swachh Bharat Mission activities and yoga programmes.
• In 2016, the scheme was restructured into a Central Sector Scheme with 100% funding from the Central Government. 
• Earlier it was a Centrally Sponsored Scheme, with expenditure being shared between the Centre and the States.
