[November-2020]

NITI Aayog, Rockefeller Foundation and Smart Power India Launch Electricity Access and Utility Benchmarking Report

  • Report, by NITI Aayog, Ministry of Power, Rockefeller Foundation, and Smart Power India, is based on a survey conducted across 10 states -representing about 65% of the total rural population.
  • Report aims to evaluate the status of electricity access in India across these states and distribution utilities.

Key findings:

  • 92% of customers reported the overall availability of electricity infrastructure within 50 metres of their premises.
  • Overall, 87% of the surveyed customers have access to grid-based electricity. Remaining 13% either use non-grid sources or don't use any electricity at all.
  • Supply hours have improved significantly across customer categories to nearly 17 hours per day.

Steps taken to ensure electricity access:

  • Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana (or Saubhagya) seeks to ensure universal household electrification (in both rural and urban areas) by providing last mile connectivity.
  • Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana was launched to provide electrification to all villages.
  • Centre is contemplating to combine the features of UDAY, DDUGJY and Integrated Power Development Scheme under an umbrella programme.
