Think lateral, then drive straight

We form part of a team of researchers in Sweden working with extracting more and more value- materials first, and then energy-form wastewater streams from paper and pulp mills. Called Resources, the project includes partners from a university, a research institute and the industry.

Paper and pulp mills often use the sludge from wastewater treatment as a direct source of heat energy, and do not usually invest in digesting the sludge and converting the biogas produced into electricity and heat. Economics often does not render the latter alternative feasible. Sludge can also be ‘relegated’ or rather ‘recycled for its nutrient and carbon content’ to silviculture/arboriculture- an open-loop recycling if one may term it so. This recycling would be a ‘back to nature’ one and not as the term usually denotes back to the anthroposphere.
