AI Washing

The Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Ministerial Council meeting was recently held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi in a hybrid mode.

Key Details

  • The meeting was chaired by the Minister of State Electronics and Information Technology and Commerce & Industry and attended by Jerry Sheehan, Director,

  • Science Technology & Innovation from OECD and Dr Tawfik Jelassi, Assistant Director General from UNESCO.

  • A common consensus was reached during the meeting about the future vision of Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI).

AI Washing

  • It is a phenomenon in which the tech companies and corporations make over-inflated claims about their use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) but in reality are using less sophisticated technology.

Types of AI washing

  • Companies claiming use of AI when they’re actually using less-sophisticated computing.

  • Companies overstating the efficacy of their AI over existing techniques.

  • Companies suggest that their AI solutions are fully operational when they are not.

  • Companies bolting an AI chatbot into their existing non-AI operating software.

Issues Associated with AI washing

  • For investors it can make it harder to identify genuinely innovative companies.

  • AI washing diverts management attention and resources away from practical AI innovation.

  • AI washing can complicate decision making for businesses that are genuinely looking for valuable AI solutions.

  • If consumers have unmet expectations from products that claim to offer advanced AI-driven solutions, this can erode trust in start-ups that are doing genuinely ground-breaking work.

  • Subpar AI technology could pose data security and privacy risks for consumers. This could push consumers away from using the technology.

How to spot AI washing?

  • Seek out mentions of ‘transparent’ AI, where companies are open about the types of data and algorithms that are involved.

  • Beware of companies that seem unwilling or unable to describe how their technology works.

  • Ask the sales representative to explain what steps are taken to avoid bias in their data and algorithms, or AI hallucinations.

  • Such skepticism is critical for making better and informed decisions regarding the adoption of AI.
