(News) The UPSC plans to enhance exam integrity by implementing facial recognition and AI surveillance

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is set to deploy advanced facial recognition and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based CCTV surveillance systems to enhance exam security and prevent malpractice, according to a PTI report. The initiative, prompted by recent controversies surrounding exam irregularities, involves two key technologies: Aadhaar-based fingerprint authentication, facial recognition, and QR code scanning of e-admit cards, alongside live AI-driven video monitoring during examinations.

The UPSC, responsible for conducting 14 major exams including the prestigious civil services examination, aims to ensure fair conduct across approximately 80 exam centers nationwide. The move underscores the commission's commitment to integrity, as stated in its tender document dated June 3, 2024: "The UPSC attaches great importance to conducting its examinations in a free, fair and impartial manner."

Quoting the tender document, PTI highlighted the UPSC's proactive approach to leveraging digital tools for verifying biometric data, monitoring candidate activities, and safeguarding against cheating, fraud, and impersonation. The AI-enabled CCTV setup will monitor exam venues, ensuring comprehensive coverage without blind spots, and generate alerts for any suspicious activity or system anomalies.

The commission emphasized the real-time nature of the systems, requiring secure attendance monitoring and proactive alerts for unauthorized movements or disruptions during exam hours. The bid submission for the technology tender closes on July 7, with the opening scheduled for the same day at 1:30 pm.

This development assumes significance amidst ongoing investigations by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into alleged irregularities in exams like UGC-NET and NEET-UG conducted by the National Testing Agency, adding urgency to secure exam administration.
