World Most Powerful Electric Eel
- Scientists at Smithsonian’s Museum of Natural History discovered an approximately eight-feet-long eel (Electrophorus volta ) in the Amazon basin with a record-breaking voltage of 840 volts of electricity which is more than 650 volts discharged by earlier electric eel found.
- According to the study, the conductivity of water in which the eel lived may have influenced the voltage; the high voltage may be an adaptation to the poor conductivity of water.
- These eels use their shock method for self-defence, hunting prey and navigation.
- The study was published in Nature Communications.
