Skill India’s SANKALP Scheme to focus on district level skilling ecosystem

  • Union Minister of Skill Development reviewed the SANKALP programme at the first Program Governance Board Meeting, which is the apex body for governance of the scheme.

Key Highlights

  • It is known as Skills Acquisition and Knowledge Awareness for Livelihood Promotion (SANKALP).
  • It is implemented by the Union Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship with the assistance of World Bank.
  • This is a centrally sponsored programme.
  • It was approved by the Union Cabinet in 2017. As of now, all 36 States/ UTs across country have submitted their consent for participation in SANKALP.
  • SANKALP aims to implement the mandate of the National Skill Development Mission (NSDM).
    Strategy:
  • Under SANKALP four key result areas have been identified viz –
  • Institutional Strengthening (at National, State & District level);
  • Quality Assurance Quality Assurance of skill development programs;
  • Inclusion of marginalised population in skill development; and
  • Expanding Skills through Public Private Partnerships (PPPs).
  • A robust IT system namely “Skill India Portal” has also been developed under SANKALP to capture and converge skill data.
