[JUNE-2022]

Hailstorm

  • Hailstorm is the precipitation of solid ice balls (called hailstones) in place of rain. The hailstorm is different from sleet or ice pellet. Sleets or ice pellets generally rain in cold weather; however the hailstorm happens due to an environment of strong, upward motion of air under ambient temperatures.
  • Hailstorms are the result of thunderstorm clouds with intense updrafts and large water droplets with sufficient portion of cloud layer below zero degree Celsius. Hailstones are generally 5-15 mm in size and 10-500 gram in weight.
