Pillars of Creation (PoC)
- NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has captured the iconic Pillars of Creation (PoC) where new stars are forming within dense clouds of gas and dust.
- The three-dimensional pillars are made up of cool interstellar gas and dust that appear – at times – semi-transparent in near-infrared light.
- The PoC are located 6,500 light years from Earth, in the Eagle Nebula of our Milky Way galaxy.
- It will help researchers revamp their models of star formation by identifying far more precise counts of newly formed stars, along with the quantities of gas and dust in the region.
Atacama snailfish
- Recently, new species, Paraliparis selti or Blue Atacama snailfish, was discovered some 6,000 to 7,000 meters deep in Atacama trench.
- Atacama Trench, also known as Peru-chile, is the submarine trench in the eastern Pacific Ocean.
- Atacama Trench marks the subduction of the Nazca Plate under the South American Plate.
- It lies offshore from an area of active volcanism.
