(AUGUST-2024)

Earth Observation Satellite Systems

  • Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe) invites the private sector to build Earth observation satellite systems.

Key Details

  • IN-SPACe released an expression of interest (EOI) inviting private Indian entities to build and manage a space-based Earth Observation (EO) satellite system under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.

Objective:

  • It aims to create a self-reliant, robust, and sustainable Earth Observation System catering to the growing demand for EO data.

Significance

  • It opens the doors for private sector participation in designing, building, and launching a constellation of satellites equipped with advanced imaging technologies.

  • The upstream infrastructure of the satellite constellation with advanced imaging technology is expected to create significant downstream commercial potential, resulting in more competitive products.

  • It presents an opportunity for Indian entities to engage in all aspects of the space industry.

  • The proposal outlines a comprehensive scope for non government entities (NGEs), including designing and building a constellation of satellites in Low Earth Orbit, equipping them with various sensors, launching satellites using Indian Satellite Launch Vehicles, monitoring spacecraft health, managing payload data download, and processing payload data to generate analysis ready data (ARD).

IN-SPACe

  • A single-window, independent, nodal agency which functions as an autonomous agency in the Department of Space (DOS).

  • It was created to facilitate private sector participation in the space sector.

  • Established as a single window agency for all space sector activities of private entities, IN-SPACe plays an important role in boosting the private space sector economy in India.

  • It is responsible to promote, enable authorise and supervise various space activities of the NGEs that include, among others, the building of launch vehicles & satellites and providing space-based services; sharing of space infrastructure and premises under the control of DOS/ISRO; and establishment of new space infrastructure and facilities.
