KRISHI-DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM (KRISHI DSS): TRANSFORMING INDIAN AGRICULTURE

Introduction:

Krishi DSS, an innovative geospatial platform introduced on 16 August 2024 by the Department of Agriculture and Pharmaceuticals, is revolutionizing Indian agriculture. Known as the Gati Shakti for Indian Agriculture, it merges geospatial and non-geospatial technologies to equip stakeholders with real-time, data-informed insights for developing a resilient, sustainable, and thriving agricultural sector.

Key Highlights of Krishi DSS

  • Integrated Geospatial Platform: Effortlessly merges satellite imagery, meteorological data, reservoir storage statistics, groundwater levels, and soil health information. Offers centralized access to extensive agricultural data from state, central, and global perspectives.

  • Real-Time Insights: Allows stakeholders to track weather trends, soil conditions, crop vitality, acreage, and receive advisories. Facilitates informed choices for farmers, policymakers, and agribusinesses.

  • Indigenous Technology: Created through collaboration between the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and the Department of Space.

Uses of Krishi DSS

  • Crop Mapping and Monitoring: Monitors crop rotation and cropping trends through parcel-level maps. Promotes sustainable agriculture with varied crop cultivation.

  • Drought Monitoring and Early Warnings: Delivers near-real-time data on soil moisture, water shortages, crop conditions, and dry spells.

  • Field Parcel Segmentation: Evaluates field-level cropping trends and soil requirements for targeted interventions.

  • One Nation, One Soil Information System: Detailed soil information, including type, pH, and health, for crop suitability and soil-water preservation measures.

Advantages of Krishi DSS Empowerment of Farmers:

  • Offers customized advisories, early disaster alerts, and accurate soil data.

  • Bridges the divide between farmers and policymakers with data-driven solutions.

Strengthen based policies:

  • Strengthens decision-making abilities at all administrative tiers.

  • Encompasses central government support of Rs.1,940 crore. Significant Initiatives:

  • AgriStack: Digital framework unifying soil profiles, crop forecasts, and farmer-centric services.

  • DGCES (Digital General Crop Estimation Survey): Improves crop yield prediction accuracy.

  • Sustainability and Resilience: Promotes crop diversification, soil preservation, and water management. Incorporates global best practices to ensure food security.

Way forward:

Krishi DSS symbolizes a transformative advancement for Indian agriculture, integrating cutting-edge geospatial technologies with a vision for sustainable progress. As a fundamental component of the Digital Agriculture Mission, it empowers stakeholders, nurtures innovation, and ensures the robustness of India’s agricultural ecosystem. Alongside AgriStack, it will spearhead a revolutionary shift in agriculture, propelling India towards self-sufficiency and sustainability.
