As a tool for enhancing government sector performance and an essential part of government financial management, the internal audit function has received increasing attention. A consensus has emerged recently regarding the audit standards that governments should adhere to. This paper examines these standards from an international perspective, noting that meeting these standards would be difficult for many nations. It is argued that there are numerous international models for internal audit, and when implementing measures to strengthen internal audit in developing and transitional nations, it may be necessary to consider various audit traditions and institutional capacities.
