NOWHERE SAFE !
Air polluting levels are on a terrifying rise in our country. Indian cities
lead the world in poor ambient air quality : according to a WHO survey , 13 out
of 25 most polluted cities in the world are in India.
The horrors were there for all to see in the recent great Delhi smog. Which
brought the Capital to a grinding halt. It is a testimony to the
collective result of years. Of non- eco – friendly practices embraced in the
name of progress, convenience, modernity and industrialisation.
When we inhale polluted air, it penetrates deep into the lungs and
cardiovascular system causing extreme health risks. India has the highest
records of respiratory disease. Reportedly nearly 1.5 million people succumb to
air pollution annually in Indian.
Another study by London researchers collected data over a four – year long
period on babies born between 2006-2010 and correlated
their birth weight with their mother’s exposure to traffic and pollution. Their
study revealed that for every five micrograms per cubic meter increase in PM 2.5
(particulate matter of 2.5 – micron size ) the risk of low birth weight
increased by 15 %.
