The Union Health Ministry has recently issued guidelines for organ transport across India.

The Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) will serve as a guiding document for healthcare institutions in States/ Union Territories to transport organs by various modes of transport, including metro trains and over water.

Human organs for transplant would be transported only within the territory of India and no organ shall be transported outside the country.

No human organ for transplant shall be allowed to be transported from outside the territory of India.

The transport protocols aim to ensure the expeditious movement of life-saving organs from the point of harvest to their destination through effective use of available infrastructure.

All cases of organ transplants, whether from a living or deceased donor, will be allocated a unique National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO)-ID for both the donor and the recipient.

It must be generated by the hospital from the NOTTO website (www.notto.mohfw.gov.in).

The directives were issued following reports of malpractice and to eliminate commercial dealing in organs, especially those involving foreign citizens.
