Indian Ocean, northern Arabian Sea, and central Bay of Bengal likely to experience rough wave days due to climate change

  • In a study published in the journal ‘Climate Dynamics’, Springer, scientists from the Delhi Institute of Technology, the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, and the National Centre for Ocean Information Services, Hyderabad, predicted that extreme wave heights in the Indian Ocean would likely change in the future.
  • Researchers found that the large-scale distribution of future waves may differ significantly from today’s based on COWCLIP2.0 datasets.
  • Based on the projection of the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) for the twenty-first century, it appears that the amplitudes of high-frequency extreme wave events will change as a result of changes in sea level pressure gradients in the Southern hemisphere.
