(SEPTEMBER-2024)
National Quantum Mission
India’s first quantum computer is expected to launch under National Quantum Mission (NQM).
Key Details
-
India’s first quantum computer, after its launch, is expected to achieve computation of 6 qubits over the next few months.
-
Moreover, amongst the targets set to be achieved, the NQM will be setting up four Section 8 companies across the four verticals of quantum technologies namely – computing, communication, measurement and sensing.
-
These companies will be run under the aegis of premier institutes like Indian Institute of Technology or the Indian Institute of Sciences
Goal of the NQM
-
To establish a quantum computer with a computation of 20-50 qubits in the next three years, 50-100 qubits in the next five years and 50-1000 qubits in the next 10 years.
-
To put these computational capabilities in context, on average internationally quantum computers have processing capabilities of 20-50 qubits at present.
About Quantum Computing
-
Quantum computing is an area of computer science that uses the principles of quantum theory at the atomic and subatomic levels. It uses subatomic particles, such as electrons or photons.
-
Classical computers, which include smartphones and laptops, encode information in binary “bits” that can either be 0s or 1s. In a quantum computer, the basic unit of memory is a quantum bit or qubit.
-
Quantum bits, or qubits, allow the subatomic particles to exist in more than one state at the same time.
