Mainstreaming Ayush for Holistic Health Ecosystem

Introduction:

India’s healthcare system is undergoing a significant transformation. The rising burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), mental health challenges, lifestyle disorders, ageing population, and escalating healthcare costs has compelled policymakers to reimagine health beyond episodic, curative care. India’s epidemiological transition, from communicable diseases to chronic and lifestyle-related conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, obesity, stress-related disorders, and mental illness, demands long-term management, behavioural change, and preventive approaches.

Convergence of Ayush and Modern Medicine

  • Integration of Ayush with modern medicine and public health creates a resilient health system.

  • Ayush focuses on holistic wellbeing, preventive care, personalized treatment, and mental health.

  • Aligns with Universal Health Coverage and sustainable healthcare goals.

National Health Policy

  • India’s National Health Policy (NHP) 2017 supports a pluralistic healthcare approach.

  • Emphasizes holistic health that includes physical, mental, social, and spiritual well-being.

  • India showcases a model where modern and traditional medicine coexists.

Growth of Ayush in Public Health

  • The establishment of the Ministry of Ayush in 2014 marked a turning point in recognising traditional medicine as a strategic pillar of national healthcare. Since then, Ayushhas progressed through strengthened institutional frameworks, regulatory reforms, and targeted programme implementation.

Convergence Mechanism

  • Convergence is not merely institutional co-location; it is a governance approach that promotes synergy, efficiency and outcome-oriented service delivery. Mainstreaming Ayush requires structured convergence across four critical dimensions: public health service delivery, education, research, and digital health.

Public Health Service Delivery

Flagship Initiatives

  • National Ayush Mission (NAM) and Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAM) integrate Ayush services in primary healthcare.

  • Co-location of Ayush services improves access, especially in rural areas.

  • Ayush practitioners enhance preventive healthcare, lifestyle counseling, and chronic condition management.

Clinical Integration

  • Standard Treatment Guidelines (STGs) for Ayush systems are being developed for common disorders.

  • Master Trainer programs facilitate cascading training across States and Union Territories.

  • Ayush interventions are effective in managing non-communicable disease (NCD) risk factors.

Integration at Secondary and Tertiary Levels

Integrated Ayush Departments

  • Established in Central Government hospitals for comprehensive healthcare services.

  • Provides preventive and therapeutic services through Integrated Medicine departments.

Specialized Models

  • Integrative Cancer Care Centres showcase Ayush’s role in oncology and rehabilitation.

  • Integrative mental health departments demonstrate comprehensive service delivery in mental health.

Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAM)

  • Comprehensive service delivery model operational across India, integrating wellness services.

  • Over 12,500 AAMs have been set up nationwide under NAM.

Public Health Initiatives

  • Successful pilot studies link Ayush with national health programs for chronic disease prevention.

  • Community health initiatives promote lifestyle changes and improve well-being.

Challenges and Solutions

  • Address perception gaps on scientific validation of Ayush.

  • Strengthen research through collaboration with medical institutes.

  • Utilize digital platforms for standardization, data capture, and improved access.

Mainstreaming Ayush

  • Aims to complement modern medicine, creating an affordable and culturally relevant health system.

  • Emphasizes the importance of policy coherence and community engagement for successful integration.

Conclusion:

As India moves towards its vision of “Swasth Bharat" the integration of Ayush into the national health framework stands as a convergence code for sustainable well-being, where tradition and science, prevention and cure, individual and community health come together to shape a healthier nation.
