https://iasexamportal.com/sites/default/files/Sharavati.jpgByakodu village in Shivamogga district is an island in the backwaters of the Sharavati, which can be accessed only through a barge. It lacks basic amenities to this day. Priya Shetty, daughter of the soil, has proved that the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is not the preserve of the urban-educated.

Priya, who studied in a Kannada-medium school, ranked 931 in the results of the civil services exam announced recently. Interestingly, Kannada literature was one of the electives in her Mains exam.

Her father, Ganapaiah Shetty, a farmer, and mother, Gunavathi, a homemaker, say a barge provided by the Department of Inland Transportation and Ports is the only means of transportation for the entire Karur and Barangi hoblis. This region turned into an island owing to the backwaters after a reservoir was built on the river at Linganamakki.

(Success Story) Renu Raj, IAS Topper 2014 (AIR-2)

Doctor Renu Raj, who bagged the second rank in the civil services test on Saturday, said she had never expected to perform so well in the prestigious examination.

Raj, the 27-year-old daughter of a retired employee of the Kerala state transport corporation, said perseverance helped her crack the examination in her first attempt.

The native of Changanassery in Kottayam district currently works in an ESI hospital at Kalluvathukkal in south Kerala’s Kollam district.

"Though I performed well in the examination and interview, I never expected such a position. It was really unexpected. I will use this great opportunity to serve the people well,” an elated Raj told Hindustan Times.

"I want to tell aspiring candidates that perseverance has its reward," she added.

Raj said her first preference will be the Indian Administrative Service. “In the IAS, you can interact with people very well and serve the needy. Society has given me so much it is time for me to give back,” she said.

She dedicated her success to her parents and husband, saying it was her childhood dream to become a civil servant.

Nitish of Udupi bags 8th rank, Koratagere lad stands 36th

The State has reaped a rich harvest in the UPSC Civil Services Exam, 2014. More than 60 candidates from the State have cracked the civil services with Udupi lad Nitish K topping the list with 8th all India ranking.

Nitish K, an engineering graduate from PES Institute of Engineering, Bengaluru, managed to feature in top 10 AIR list in his third attempt.

Son of K Ramakrishna Hebbar, an employee of Karnataka Bank and Bharati, a homemaker, Nitish hails from Kukkehalli in Perdur of Udupi district.

Speaking to Deccan Herald from Shimla, where he is undergoing training for Indian Audit and Accounts Service, Nitish said he is on cloud nine for achieving a good ranking and thanked his parents, uncle, a DySP with Karnataka police and his friend Vinay for their unflinching support.

In his first attempt in 2012, Nitish cleared the Prelims, Mains but missed the ranking by ten marks in the interview. However, he was able to clear all three rounds in his second attempt and gained 547th ranking in 2013. He joined Indian Audit and Accounts Service. Nitish said that he had planned his studies meticulously and studied for 10 to 12 hours a day. His optional subject was Maths.

Koratagere lad excels

Cracking the UPSC exams is entirely dependent on one’s will to do it rather than which city one prepares in and which coaching centre one attends to. This is the belief with which Balaji D K studied for the civil services examination. An alumnus of Bangalore University, Balaji has secured AIR 36 in the UPSC exam 2014. The 25-year-old is a native of Koratagere in Tumakuru district.

(News) Civil Services as career choice has lowest success rates

Civil Services as career choice has lowest success rates

It took Ira Singhal, this year’s Indian Administrative Services (IAS) exam topper, four years to get to that position. Singhal’s was a special case—she had earlier cracked the exam but was refused a posting because of her disability. But nearly seven out of every 10 candidates require at least three attempts before succeeding in the civil services entrance.

Abysmal success rates, years of preparation and multiple attempts by candidates past their mid-twenties studying subjects other than what they have been trained in, and the ability to get into some of the country’s best educational institutions are some of the key attributes of the IAS entrance process. Here’s what data put out by the Union Public Services Commission (UPSC) for the decade up to 2012 (the latest available numbers) tells us.

The civil services exam has among the lowest success rates among competitive examinations. More than 40.59 lakh people applied during 2002-2012. Only 20.11 lakh appeared for the preliminary exam. Those who qualify the preliminary stage have to go through two more stages: main examination and interview. The entire process lasts 9-10 months. The overall success rate has always been less than five people per 1,000 applicants.

However, if there is one example of the Indian youth not giving up, it is the civil services exam. Only one in every 10 candidate succeeds in the first attempt.

The civil services has always been viewed as a dangerous career choice because it might be too late to pursue other avenues if one does not succeed. However, this does not deter aspirants to continue their dogged pursuits, often well past their mid-twenties.

(Success Story) Balaguru IAS Topper 2014 (AIR-256)

It’s celebration time for Balaguru, who despite abject poverty has cracked the prestigious civil service examinations. “My childhood dream was to become a Collector. But I knew it was at a distant reach because of poverty,” said the 27-year-old, who has laboured in various jobs, including that of a security guard, before clearing the UPSC exam in his fourth attempt.

Son of Kumarasamy and Elammal, agricultural labourers at Therapadi village in Aravakurichi, Balaguru studied up to Class XII at the Aravakurichi government high school. His sister Janaki, told Express over phone that Balaguru ended up as a daily wager to sustain the family. The IAS aspirant worked in a financial enterprise in Thiruthuraipoondi from 2004-08. As a responsible brother, Balaguru, with his meagre earning of Rs 4000 a month, had arranged Janaki’s marriage in 2009.
