Gist of Millennium Development Goals - 2015

Gist of Millennium Development Goals - 2015

The Millennium Development Goals MDG Report 2015 found that the 15-year effort to achieve the eight aspirational goals set out in the Millennium Declaration in 2000 was largely successful across the globe, while acknowledging shortfalls that remain. The data and analysis presented in the report show that with targeted interventions, sound strategies, adequate resources and political will, even the poorest can make progress.

The final MDG report confirms that goal-setting can lift millions of people out of poverty, empower women and girls, improve health and well-being, and provide vast new opportunities for better lives.

Key points

  • The number of people now living in extreme poverty has declined by more than half, falling from 1.9 billion in 1990 to 836 million in 2015.
  • The number of people in the working middle class—living on more than $4 a day—nearly tripled between 1991 and 2015.
  • The proportion of undernourished people in the developing regions dropped by almost half since 1990.
  • The number of out-of-school children of primary school age worldwide fell by almost half, to an estimated 57 million in 2015, down from 100 million in 2000.
  • Gender parity in primary school has been achieved in the majority of countries.
  • The mortality rate of children under-five was cut by more than half since 1990.
  • Since 1990, maternal mortality fell by 45 percent worldwide.
  • Over 6.2 million malaria deaths have been averted between 2000 and 2015.
  • New HIV infections fell by approximately 40 percent between 2000 and 2013.
  • By June 2014, 13.6 million people living with HIV were receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) globally, an immense increase from just 800,000 in 2003.
  • Between 2000 and 2013, tuberculosis prevention, diagnosis and treatment interventions saved an estimated 37 million lives.
  • Worldwide 2.1 billion people have gained access to improved sanitation.
  • Globally, 147 countries have met the MDG drinking water target, 95 countries have met the MDG sanitation target and 77 countries have met both.
  • Official development assistance from developed countries increased 66 percent in real terms from 2000 and 2014, reaching $135.2 billion.

16 candidates to submit fitness certificate to DoPT

As many as 16 candidates who have cleared the Civil Services Examination have been declared temporary unfit by Central Standing Medical Boards (CSMBs).

The DoPT has asked the "unfit" candidates to get themselves treated and submit fitness certificate to the authorities concerned.

"The candidates are further advised that the medical status of the candidate is an important parameter in deciding the service allocated to a candidate, and can have cascading effect on the service allocation to other candidates below in rank.

RSS Affiliated coaching institute Samkalp mentors IAS aspirants

Against the perception that Rashtriya Swayemsewak Sangh (RSS) produces only swayemsewaks, motor-mouths or right wing leaders, its affiliated coaching institute Samkalp has continued to give the nation its fair share of IAS officers too.

The number of IAS officers who have taken some help from Samkalp has now reached approximately 450. The figure is shared by the New Delhi chapter, tracing the time the institute began its journey in 1986. After churning out so many IAS officers, Samkalp's outside chapter has now opened in Agra. Fresh batch of aspirants is consulting the Agra chapter since January.

The coaching has been attended by aspirants at various levels. Some come to attend the interview training programme, while others visit libraries or attend classes, an RSS man at Delhi chapter told TOI.

Besides IAS, there are around 4,000 officers who cleared around 24 exams conducted by the UPSC thanks to Samkalp, the RSS source added. The coaching also had centres at Kanpur and Roorkie, but they have for some time now they have only been serving as guiding centres.

Yojana Magazine: Issue November 2015

The history of humankind is replete with instances of migration - Africa to Asia & Europe; Central Asia to India (the 'Aryan invasion'); across the freezing Atlantic from North America to Alaska & the ARctic regions or visa versa. All this entailed transport of men & material. So, means of transport were always an important factor in human evolution - whether it be on foot, bullock carts, horses, donkeys, yaks, camels or the high flying aircraft carriers which reach you to places across the globe in a few hours. When we talk of transport today, what we actually mean are highways and super-highways, bullet trains flying by on fast tracks, the metro rail which has metamorphosed urban life, et al. Road transport is still the prime means of conveying people & goods from one place to another. This means that a country needs good, well maintained roads covering the length and breadth of the country, including remote and inaccessible regions. This is a generation of migration again, like our ancestors, when people move away from their hometowns to the big cities in search of livelihoods. Travelling for holidays has also become a big fad nowadays. And, of course, consumer and non-consumer items are also transported from one place to another, whether it be milk & vegetables or refrigerators & washing machines. Roads are, thus, to a large extent the nerve centre of the economy.
