The Union Public Service Commission will be conducting the Special Class Railway Apprentices Examination, 2009 at 41 centres on 26-7-2009 (Sunday). Admission Certificates to the candidates have been dispatched. Rejection Letters citing the ground (s) for rejection have also been dispatched. If any applicant has not received either the admission certificate or the rejection letter, he/she may contact UPSC Facilitation Counter on Tel. The “Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana” (KVPY) is a program started during 1999 by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India to encourage students of Basic Sciences, Engineering and Medicine to take up research careers in these areas. The aim of the program is to identify and encourage talented students with aptitude for research.

News : No entrance fee for women taking UPSC, SSC Exams

Women candidates appearing for competitive exams conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and Staff Selection Commission (SSC) will not have to pay fee while applying for central government jobs.

As part of its efforts to increase representation of women in central government jobs, the government has decided to exempt women candidates from payment of fees and asked recruiting agencies UPSC and SSC to make this clear in all advertisements to be released for this purpose.

It was the urge to serve the country's rural population that made 30-year-old Shubhra Saxena to quit her well-paid IT job four years back and prepare for civil service examinations, says the UPSC topper.

"It is a very good feeling. Every person achieves victory at their own pace," an elated Saxena said, minutes after the news trickled in that she topped the 2008 civil services examination.

She attributed her feat to her "loving" parents and husband, saying they "were very much supportive when I expressed my desire to appear for civil services."

Shubhra Saxena: First of all, thank you. Regarding how hard it was, yes, it was hard. Cracking the Civil Services exam is a tough job. But then I think that every aspirant is working very hard towards it. So it is labour as well as God's grace that has landed me at the top spot.

It was woman power all the way in the Civil Services (Main) Examination 2008, as they took the top three positions in one of the toughest competitive exams in the country, officials said on Monday.

Shubhra Saxena, a graduate from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, and Sharandeep Kaur Brar, a post-graduate from Panjab University, were ranked first and second in the Civil Services (Main) Examination 2008, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) announced in New Delhi. Another woman, Kiran Kaushal was ranked third.

Among the male candidates, physically challenged Varinder Kumar Sharma was ranked first and overall bagged the fourth position. Saxena cleared the exam in her second attempt. Sharma, a bachelor of engineering from Punjab Engineering College, cleared the exam in his first attempt.

Success Stroy : Women grab top civil services ranks

Women on top was the verdict of the 2008 civil services examination. For the first time, the top three positions went to women.

In another first, a physically disabled candidate topped among men. Varinder Kumar Sharma is from Chandigarh.

Leading the pack was 30-year-old Shubhra Saxena from Ghaziabad. An IIT Roorkee graduate, Saxena is a teacher at an IAS coaching institute in Delhi.

“I did not always want to become a civil servant,” she said. “But four years in the IT industry were enough to make me see the futility of it all. I realised I was in no position to make a meaningful change in our policies or affect development.”
