Its a good initiative to change the pattern of the examination. But to change it entirely is not a good option because of few reasons.
a) Mains prepartion will have to be done separately apart from studying and practicing for the Aptitude test.
b) In the previous format we could prepare for the optional we are going to take in the mains in the prelims itself by opting for that subject.
c) It will put some extra burden on the candidates preparing for Aptitude and for mains separately.
So my suggestion is, rather than changing the structure on the basis of CAT and other exams, just keep Aptitude as one of the sections of GS (Say 50 % Questions) and keep the other things as it is.

i agree to ajitmohril that UPSC should include Aptitude as one section and prelim contain 50% questions of apti.but whatever be the decision UPSC must inform as earlier as possible so according to that Aspirants may plan for exam.

i strongly feel, that there seems nothing vague in formatting UPSC preliminary test as of GMAT i.e computerised set pattern of aptitude
evaluation indeed it saves candidates from anticipation of results.

i am very proud to be here in this website to share my views...change is always needed to ensure smooth functionality of any departments...as UPSE is concerned this change can have better results in near future...for first some years this change may be look like useless..but it defintely takes many years to fruit it s result...for me it is good positive step to ensure equal to all for their preparations for preliminary which is mearly a screening test...

What is aptitude test? whether they mean the maths qs..like mensuration problems and the CAT based numerical sums? what is the need for those qs in UPSC when already a section of 10-20 qs is there in the name of numerical ability? R these bank exams ? to test our numerical skills,we already hav enuf qs papers to crack these in CAT,GMAT..... So i feel absolutely there is no need for the proposed changes. In the event of introducing it anyway, whom the UPSC is trying to satisfy? Who are going to be the beneficiaries/losers of the new proposal? Changes have to be made radical like testing the Ethics and morales of the candidiates..otherwise the new change will benefit only the IIT ians and be a bane to the Pure science/ Non Math background. I wud like to ask them whether they will be willing to add few sections from public administration, psychology, political science ,human interactions etc as these are what play an important role in shaping the career of the UPSC aspirants not MATHS questions or formula based sums.. NEED SUM INTEROSPECTION PLS

There is nothing wrong in having an aptitude test instead of preliminary test but its imperative to realize that this move will hamper the overall preparation of mains examination as the candidates will have to study three subjects afresh.
There is a strong possibility that it may dilute the quality the mains examination that is known for.
Mere administrative aptitude is not the sine qua non to be a good administrator, one has to be knowledgeable enough to comprehend the problems of our country and act effectively.
Making it online will only hamper the chances of the rural candidates who are more comfortable with paper and pencil.

The aptitude test for preliminary exam will be very apt for selecting candidates to Main examination. But if the aptitude test implemented, the time gap between the aptitude test and main may be extended for preparation of main exam.

I am a software engineer. So i have no problem about taking an aptitude exam instead of an UPSC prelims exam. But UPSC should view from a perspective that if the prelims is changed to purely aptitude, how will the non engineering students compete with us?? There wont be justice in the competition. And moreover the aptitude will screen all the engineering students for mains exam. So only among the engineering students will the competition exists for Mains exam. This does not seem just to me. Though i support the aptitude exams because am good at it, my general view is that it shows partiality to engineering students. Administration can be done equally good by arts and pure science students too. UPSC has to be responsible and think a lot before it decides for such changes.
