(Success Story) UPSC 2020 TOPPER, Jivani Kartik Nagjibhai's (Rank-8) Strategy to Cracking UPSC Exams

(Success Story) UPSC 2020 TOPPER, Jivani Kartik Nagjibhai's (Rank-8) Strategy to Cracking UPSC Exams

Jivani Kartik Nagjibhai is a serving IPS officer of Gujarat cadre who secured an all India rank of 8 in UPSC Civil Services Examination 2020. A mechanical engineer from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, this is Jivani's 3rd attempt. He was successful in getting selected on his second attempt into the Indian Police Services. However, he kept trying to reach his IAS goal and has finally found success this year. He also holds the record of scoring the highest marks in Gujarat state civil services.

Coaching And Self Study

Jivani did not take any coaching classes in his 2017 attempt. However, having been unable to qualify mains, he decided on taking some guidance. His 2018 rank of 94 is a testament that this was a well thought out and successful move on his part.

Strategy

Jivani has cracked prelims on every attempt. His scores were always 10-15 marks above the usual cut-off, which allowed him to start his mains preparation immediately after prelims and gave him the peace of mind to progress.

Jivani kept his sources limited to standard sources. He revised every source 7 to 8 times combined in all his attempts. He started each source by reading it in a very relaxed and open-minded manner, much like how one would read a storybook. This allowed him to understand the source material's structure and content so that the next time he picked up the same source to study in more depth, he already knew which topics to cover and how.

Jivani also made crisp notes for each subject. For example, his whole general studies Geography was consolidated into a 50 pages note. This allowed him to revise everything multiple times in very limited periods. For books like Laxmikant or Spectrum, which are already in notes format, he simply highlighted the main keywords. This allowed him to revise the entire Laxmikanth in just one day.

Cracking UPSC Prelims every time

There are certain tricks that Jivani followed for the actual exam that he believes allowed him to achieve this difficult feat.

Elimination Techniques

A lot of this comes down to proper practice. When you have taken enough tests and solved enough previous year's papers, you realise there are ways of making choices even when you are not 100% certain as to which is the right answer. By eliminating options based on which are least likely to be correct, you can make an informed guess as to which of the options is most likely to be the correct answer.

Equal Weightage For Options

Jivani realised by going through the previous year's question papers that in prelims, each of the four options is correct 25% of the time. This trick may not be very helpful towards the beginning, but at the end of the exam, if you are unable to solve only a few questions, you can use this tip to figure out the most likely response.

Overall, UPSC Civil Services is about smart work, the willingness to study hard, and perseverance. Candidates that embody these qualities will always find success in this exam.

Best of Luck.

(Success Story) UPSC 2020 TOPPER, Praveen Kumar's (Rank-7) Success Strategy

(Success Story) UPSC 2020 TOPPER, Praveen Kumar's (Rank-7) Success Strategy

Hailing from the Jamui region of Bihar, Praveen Kumar is one of the toppers of the Union Public Service Commission's Civil Services Examination for the year 2020. A graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K); Praveen has previously cracked the GATE examination with an all India rank of 5 and Engineering Services Examination with an all India rank of 3 in 2018. He even chose Civil Engineering as his optional for CSE, such is his expertise over his core field. This was his 2nd attempt. In 2019 he had qualified prelims but failed to qualify mains.

UPSC Study Sources

Praveen followed the usual sources such as Laxmikanth for Polity and Spectrum for History. He followed the PMF IAS's Geography book and believes it to be an excellent source. He also followed Shankar IAS for Environment and believes similar books by PMF IAS are equally good sources. Praveen believes popular books suggested by toppers are all good sources. It matters how well you study them by following the UPSC syllabus and previous year's questions, and revising them multiple times, instead of moving from one source to another. For current affairs, Praveen followed The Hindu Daily Current Affairs and supplemented it by following the PT365 by any leading coaching. Keeping your sources limited and revising multiple times is key.

UPSC Prelims Strategy

Praveen's prelims strategy pivoted around its 3 components – static, current, and test series. Praveen focussed on revising his static portion 5 to 6 times and his current affairs compilations 2 to 3 times at least before prelims. Solving the previous year's papers starting from 2011 is important. He took 2 to 3 full tests from different coachings to get a broader idea.

UPSC Mains Strategy

The most important step is making notes for each topic mentioned in the syllabus separately using both static and current materials. Revising these notes multiple times ensured Praveen could recall information at the drop of the hat during the examination. Concentrate on creating notes for the static part first and then add the current affairs sequentially to them. He had revised these notes 5 to 6 times before the exam.

Note making and my Evernote notes of GS – Prateek Jain

Answer writing is the next step. Unlike most toppers. Praveen did not practice any daily answer writing series. Instead, once he had completed a subject, he started solving 2 or 3 questions asked in upsc mains previous year's papers on the subject by UPSC each day. Taking a test series and ensuring you complete each test of 20 questions within the allotted time is also one of the keys to being able to complete your mains paper during the actual exam.

Last Words

Praveen believes if you take the time to understand a topic completely while reading it, you need not face any difficulty recalling it and writing answers related to it when the time comes. However, if you try to simply learn information without actually analysing it, chances are, your answers will never be up to the UPSC standard. So study well, concentrate on developing a deeper understanding, revise and practice to the best of your ability, and you too can crack this exam.

Best of Luck.

(Success Story) UPSC 2020 TOPPER, Meera K's (Rank-6) Winning Strategy

(Success Story) UPSC 2020 TOPPER, Meera K's (Rank-6) Winning Strategy

Meera K from Kerala secured the coveted all India rank of 6 in UPSC Civil Services Examination 2020. Meera is a B.Tech graduate in Mechanical Engineering from Thrissur government engineering college, the batch of 2016. She was placed in Bengaluru for a successful corporate career, but she left it behind to pursue her UPSC dreams. This was Meera's 4th UPSC CSE attempt and she is one of the 10 from the state of Kerala to qualify in the top 100 of UPSC CSE.

UPSC Study Sources

Meera insists on covering all NCERTs from class 6 to 12 and made detailed notes to use as her main source. Making NCERT notes ensures that you can revise books worth hundreds of pages in a matter of hours. For current affairs, she followed Indian Express daily and monthly compilation booklets. She also recommends using the compilations specifically released for prelims or mains. Meera further for the rest of the subjects.

Prelims Strategy

Meera concentrated on reading the static portions related to the current affairs very thoroughly and it aided in her prelims exam. She also solved 26+ full questions papers in the 2 months leading to the prelims examination. Each Mock paper has 100 questions and thus solving these papers gives one access to 20 to 30 thousand questions. Cracking prelims after covering so many topics becomes a lot easier. She also recommends solving a question paper each day between 9:30 am and 11:30 am, which is the time slot when UPSC conducts Prelims paper-I each year. Not overthinking the options and answering confidently during the actual examination gives you a big advantage over most aspirants.

UPSC Mains Strategy

The key to cracking mains according to Meera is practising answer writing and paying extra care to your optional subject. After reading each topic, try to summarise the contents in your own words to get a hang of presenting your thoughts accurately. Set aside at least an hour each day to practice writing a few answers. Take Mock tests for mains as this would allow you to test yourself in exam conditions as well as evaluate your answer writing skills.

For optional, start with covering each topic mentioned in the syllabus thoroughly. In-depth coverage is the key here. Meera had taken up Sociology as her optional. Sociology is first introduced in class XI, and thus the NCERT books for XI formed the base of her preparation. Once her concepts were clear, she moved on to recommended books.

Interview Strategy

Meera says there is no need to overthink your attire or appearance. Being polite and presentable is good enough as long as you have prepared well. Tell the board about yourself with confidence and have the backup knowledge to answer any question related to Your DAF and you should sail through. The board is not looking for infallible candidates, but those that can make reasonable deductions even without knowing everything.

Like Meera, never giving up on your dreams can be your greatest strength too. She wishes all candidates the very best for their life ahead.

Best of Luck.

(Success Story) UPSC 2020 TOPPER, Mamta Yadav's (Rank-5) Strategy To Cracking UPSC CSE Every Time

(Success Story) UPSC 2020 TOPPER, Mamta Yadav's (Rank-5) Strategy To Cracking UPSC CSE Every Time

The first one to become an Indian Administrative Officer(IAS) from the village of Basai, a small hamlet near Delhi, Mamta Yadav has done the unthinkable – she has cracked the prestigious UPSC Civil Services Examination in both her attempts. In her first attempt in 2019, she secured an all India rank of 556 and secured a position with the Indian Railways Personnel Services. She appeared for her 2nd attempt in 2020 while serving as an officer with the services. This time, she achieved her dream of becoming an IAS officer.

How Mamta Started Her Journey

Mamta is a graduate in Physics from Hindu College under Delhi University and thus from a core science background. To get a hang of the humanities subjects in the UPSC Civil Services examination, Mamta enrolled with Vajiram and Ravi soon after her graduation. However, she opted to cover her Physics optional on her own. In her second attempt, however, she decided to proceed with self-study. But she took test series mocks for both her prelims and mains examinations.

AIR-5 Mamta Yadav's Strategy

Mamta offers a few valuable steps that every aspirant, especially beginners, should follow to ensure they stand the best possible chance at cracking this exam.

  1. Know the exam and steer clear of confusion – The internet is full of white noise and the people around you will all have different opinions. This can lead to confusion in a new aspirant. But one can navigate this by doing your research. Lookup a few topper's strategies and direction by popular institutes. Stick to the most popular and long-proven advice. For example, Mamta did not deviate from the standard books recommended by toppers and institutes alike such as Spectrum for History, Laxmikanth for Polity, NCERTs for Geography and Economics, Shankar IAS for the environment, etc.

  1.  The syllabus and previous year's questions are your guides – Follow the topics in the syllabus diligently. Solve at least all papers starting from 2013. One or two questions at the least are repeated each year. Besides, the previous year's questions allow you to understand how to study the material in the syllabus and what kind of knowledge UPSC expects you to have.
  2. Solve as many UPSC mock tests as possible – Mamta advises aspirants to take as many mock tests as possible. This will allow you to understand your strengths and weaknesses and you will be able to further tailor your strategy as per your needs. Mamta believes one of the reasons for her lower rank in 2019 was her not taking enough mock tests, including those for essays and ethics papers. This is a mistake that she rectified in this attempt and the resultant success is out there for all to see.
  3. Revision is key to cracking prelims – Multiple revisions are what allow an aspirant to cover that extra mile needed to crack the often unpredictable preliminary examination. Mamta recommends revising the static portion at least 5 to 6 times before the prelims exam and paying extra attention to related current affairs.

With a little smart study and effort, you too can become an IAS officer one day. Mamta Yadav wishes all aspirants the best of luck.

Best of Luck.
