(Success Story) UPSC 2020 TOPPER, Yash Jaluka's (Rank-4) Economics Optional Strategy

(Success Story) UPSC 2020 TOPPER, Yash Jaluka's (Rank-4) Economics Optional Strategy

Yash Jaluka, a native of Jharkhand, has secured the prestigious all India rank 4 in the 2020 UPSC Civil Services Examination. He is an alumnus of Delhi Public School and has an economics master's degree in Economics from Delhi School of Economics. This was Yash's very first attempt at the Civil Services Examination. His optional was Economics.

Why Choose Economics Optional?

Although the reason Yash chose economics is his background in the subject, but he assures aspirants that one need not be a student of economics to take advantage of this optional. Economics is a very structured and logical subject. It is objectively easier to score in compared to most other humanities subjects and Yash highly recommends this optional.

Economics Optional Strategy by AIR-4 Yash Jaluka

Knowing The Scope of the Subject

Like all others, Economics optional is also divided into two papers. Paper 1 is theoretical and covers topics such as microeconomics, macroeconomics, international economics, environmental economics, developmental economics, public economics, etc.

Paper 2 deals completely with the Indian Economy and its sectors.

Economics Optional Paper 1

Yash recommends the following sources –

  1. Advanced Economics Theory (Microeconomic Analysis) by HL Ahuja (Main source)
  2. Microeconomic Theory by Nicholson and Snyder (specifically for numerical)
  3. Macroeconomics Theories and Policies by Froyen (Main source)
  4. Macroeconomic (Theory and Policies) by HL Ahuja (Supplementary read)
  5. International Economics by Dominick Salvatore (Needs multiple reads)

  1. International Economics (Theory and Policy) by Paul Krugman (For speculative attack model only)
  2. The Economics Of Development And Planning by Jhingan (Main source)
  3. Intermediate Environmental Economics by Kolstad (Main source)
  4. Blog by IAS (2018 batch) Kumar Anubhav for Environmental Economics (Supplementary)
  5. Public Finance in Theory and Practice by Musgrave and Musgrave (Main source) – read selective chapters as mentioned in Abhimanyu Gehlot's Blog
  6. UPSC Previous Year's Question Papers
  7. Current Affairs

Always try to link all theories and models to current affairs. This not only emboldens your preparation but also helps you keep interested. Some parts of International Economics are more important for Paper 2 and should be dealt with that way.

Yash did not take any practice test series for Paper 1. Instead, he solved past year papers and recommended that aspirants do the same. Past year's papers get repeated often. Another aspect of this paper is including diagrams and assumptions specific to each model. Those are the most important parts.

Economics Optional Paper 2

Paper 2 is completely about Indian economics. The only book Yash recommends is Indian Economy (Performance and Policies) by Uma Kapila. This book forms the crux of your preparation which is then followed by supplementing papers from the EPW website. Yash also recommends reading blogs by economics professors on the Ideas For India website. For pre-independence economic history, Yash read The Economic History of India (1857-2010) by Tirthankar Roy. Yash highly recommends using the internet to look up papers related to growth and agriculture like those by Prof. Ashok Gulati, Prof. Amrish Chand, Prof. Bharat Ramaswamy, etc. Check out sites by WTO, etc.

This is a research-intensive paper as data is needed to substantiate your answers. Gather data from Niti Aayog, Budget, Economic Survey, etc. And keep Economists and their arguments as talking points in all answers. With a little effort, you too can top this exam.

Best of Luck.

(Success Story) UPSC 2020 TOPPER, Ankita Jain (Rank-03) Shares Her Current Affairs Strategy

(Success Story) UPSC 2020 TOPPER, Ankita Jain (Rank-03) Shares Her Current Affairs Strategy

In UPSC Civil Services Examination 2020, sisters Ankita and Vaishali have cracked this coveted exam in the same year - one with AIR 3 and the other with AIR 21. Ankita secured the all-India rank of 3 in this exam. A Computer Science Engineer by training, Ankita has done her B.Tech from Delhi University. She spent 14 months working in the Software industry in Bangalore, later joining the reputed DRDO using her GATE score. Ankita had already cracked UPSC once, posted as an officer with the Audit and Accounts Services in Mumbai. This was her fourth attempt.

Ankita Jain's Basic Strategy For UPSC CSE 2020

Through her journey, Ankita has learned the hard way about how to navigate this examination. She topped UPSC while still working with the Audit and Accounts Services. Time management is key and despite being a working professional, Ankita consistently devoted 6 hours of her day to UPSC preparation.

Ankita also says the UPSC Syllabus is very important and that is where every aspirant should begin. Keep it handy and stick to the topics mentioned in the syllabus. The only reason she could manage her preparation is that she focussed only on the topics and not on the white noise surrounding the exam. She maintained her routine and altered it time and again to meet her needs. She used NCERT Books PDF diligently, made her notes, and kept revising as much as she can. All of this together helped her secure AIR-3 in this attempt.

Ankita Jain's Current Affairs Strategy For UPSC CSE Exam

Sources

Top 5 Youtube channel for UPSC/ IAS Exam preparation

Ankita kept her sources short and crisp -

  • Either The Hindu or the Indian Express - Reading one newspaper every day is key. The Hindu is prefered for interviews. Indian Express is a better fit for the rest.
  • Followed Youtube channels Prelims Booster.
  • Vision monthly magazine, followed by PT365 and Mains365 for revision.
  • Used Youtube channel for All Inclusive IAS as a supplementary source when needed.

UPSC Prelims

For prelims, Ankita mostly depended on videos and PDFs of All Inclusive IAS. In case any topic was left out, she would go back to Vision IAS's PT365. She does not recommend making notes for prelims current affairs; instead, she used to highlight the important parts. She made separate notes from her mock test solutions and highlighted her weak points. At least 5 revisions are recommended.

UPSC Mains

For mains, make notes and divide topics under GS 1, 2, 3 or 4. Add current affairs notes as a supplement to your static notes. Once your notes are completed, you can stick to them. There is no need to go back to the monthly magazines, etc. Note down statistics and numerical values. These are very important to enrich your mains answers. Make sure you have a single repository of notes for both static and current material together. The sources do not change. Just your approach alters. Focus on compressing your notes each time you revise.

UPSC Interview

For the interview, Ankita suggests using the Vajiram and Ravi page. Using daily newspaper topics to enrich your views is important. Ankita herself made online notes. Make notes about all topics mentioned in your DAF including your native place, or your educational background, etc. Overall, as long as you are confident in your views and can present them to the panel, Ankita assures you, you will make a difference.

Best of Luck.

INSTC connects Europe with India for first time

  • The western wing of the International North South Transport Corridor (INSTC), which offers a shorter multimodal transportation route between Europe and India compared with the Suez Canal way, became operational this week with a Finnish logistics company despatching a consignment from Finland to India.

About:

  • The INSTC is a 7,200 km-long multimodal transportation network encompassing sea, road, and rail routes to offer the shortest route of connectivity.
  • It links the Indian Ocean to the Caspian Sea via the Persian Gulf onwards into Russia and Northern Europe.
  • It is aimed at reducing the carriage cost between India and Russia by about 30 percent and bringing down the transit time by more than half.
  • It was launched in 2000 with India, Russia, and Iran as its founding members and work on actualizing the corridor began in 2002.
  • Since then, INSTC membership has expanded to include 10 more countries – Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Ukraine, Syria, Belarus, and Oman. Bulgaria has been included as an observer state.
  • The Baltic countries like Latvia and Estonia have also expressed willingness to join the INSTC.

Architecture of the INSTC: Transport routes and modes

The INSTC spirals across the following branches:

  • Central branch: It begins from the Jawaharlal Nehru Port in India’s western state of Maharashtra (in the Indian Ocean Region) and connects to the Bandar Abbas port on the Strait of Hormuz.
